Portugalvs
Turkiye
People put Portugal and Turkiye on the same list when they want a coast, a milder winter than northern Europe, and a monthly burn that still feels possible. The lists should split there. Portugal is in the EU, so a residence card changes how you move around Schengen and how far ahead you can plan. Turkiye sits beside Europe as its own large market. A permit there does not hand you the same mobility.
A cafe receipt is a bad way to compare the two costs. Lisbon and Porto have a well-known housing squeeze, and Algarve rents follow the season. Istanbul can still look light if your salary arrives in euros or dollars, until the lease itself is priced in foreign currency or the lira moves against the rest of the month. Izmir and Antalya are real coastal alternatives. They are quieter than Istanbul, and they are not small versions of Lisbon.
Admin language follows the map. Portuguese is what the town hall, the lease, and the clinic expect, with more English in Lisbon and Porto offices than in a smaller city. Turkish is the working language outside tourist streets. Istanbul's main airport connects you almost anywhere. Lisbon is a solid European gateway, not a hub of that size.
Portugal stops being the better pick if you need Istanbul's job market, late-night city scale, or a rent that stays soft on a foreign salary. Turkiye stops being the better pick if you need EU residence, prices you can forecast in euros, or a plan that does not ride permit renewals. Check the live residence route for your passport before you book a year on either side.
